ChatGPT-4 and Plugins: Empowering AI Conversations Like Never Before

With the addition of plug-in compatibility, OpenAI is able to significantly increase ChatGPT’s functionality and offer the chatbot its first access to real-time online data. 

The fact that ChatGPT can only access its training data—which expires in 2021—has limited it up until this point. According to OpenAI, plug-ins would enable the bot to interact with specific websites and do online searches, potentially converting the system into a versatile interface for a range of services and websites. The business claims in an announcement post that it is akin to allowing other services to serve as ChatGPT’s “eyes and ears.” 

According to OpenAI, a “small number of users” will soon have access to plug-ins. Initially, there are 11 plug-ins for external sites, including Expedia, OpenTable, Kayak, Klarna Shopping, and Zapier. OpenAI is also providing some of its own plug-ins, such as one for deciphering code and another one dubbed “Browsing” that enables ChatGPT to surf the internet for data. 

As an example of what the browsing plug-in can accomplish, the company shows someone asking how the box office sales of this year’s Oscar winners compare to recently released movies, and the bot shows its work for what sources it’s looking at before spitting out an answer. This is something ChatGPT would have been unable to accomplish before. 

This experimental feature is obviously similar to Microsoft’s Bing, which has custom tech that feeds GPT-4 (the language model underlying ChatGPT) information from the internet. The plug-in from OpenAI does more than retrieve current data, though. According to the documentation provided by the company, it can also integrate with APIs, enabling it to “perform actions on behalf of the user.” That could make it much more powerful– Bing could help you plan a vacation by telling you about flights and hotels, but ChatGPT could help you book it. 

Allowing ChatGPT to act on a user’s behalf rather than just providing them with information raises some apparent safety and security concerns. Experts have already expressed worry about this in reaction to an experiment OpenAI conducted with GPT-4. The bot, for instance, created instructions for hiring a TaskRabbit employee to complete a CAPTCHA it was unable to answer when told to by a human tester. 

OpenAI says it’s taken threats posed by these plug-ins into consideration and has “implemented several safeguards,” including limiting the availability of the plug-ins to a very small number of people to start. The firm provides a sign-up for a waitlist here and states in a blog post that it would “initially prioritise a small number of developers and ChatGPT Plus subscribers” to acquire plug-in access.
